Antivirus software is designed to protect computers from invasion by known viruses of various kinds, and is also used to protect them from the potential severe consequences of infection.  The important word used here is ‘known’ since no antivirus software can detect viruses that are as yet unknown. The only exception to this is software that implement real-time behavioral analysis. This will be a topic I write about in the future.
