What is Security Software?

Security Software is a broad term that encompasses any computer program or component that performs the task of securing a computer or computer network. Software in this category include: antivirus, antispyware and firewall software.

Antivirus software tries to identify, quarantine or remove malicious software. Some of these malicious threats include: worms, phishing, rootkits, trojans and other file based malicious intruders.

Antispyware software tries to remove or block adware and spyware. Adware aka advertising supported software automatically runs, displays or installs advertising software onto the unsuspecting user's computer. Spyware is software that is installed in the background on a user's computer for the sole purpose of secretly monitoring the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring

Finally, firewall software (personal firewall) is software that controls network traffic in and out of a computer, allowing or disallowing messages. All this is based on a security policy set up by the software by default or by the user to customize it for their needs.

As you can see, security software covers a broad base of software. Whether it's antivirus, antispyware or firewall software, security software is each one's category. Articles will be added regularly to add depth to this ongoing documentation site on security software.
